Whereas, the city of Nashville has a distinguished and nationally recognized history of celebrating the contributions of its creative citizens; and

Whereas, Nashville’s creative fashion industry and fashion-related entrepreneurship is an important part of the city’s economy; and

Whereas, Nashville Fashion Week is a celebration of creativity through fashion that brings together Nashville residents and visitors; and

Whereas, Nashville Fashion Week is organized through the generosity of private sponsors and the spirit of volunteerism, and supports the new Nashville Fashion Forward Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Karl F. Dean, Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, do hereby encourage all Nashvillians to join me in celebrating Nashville Fashion Week.

Today starts the Educational Panels for Fashion Week Four fashion industry panels will take place during Lexus Nashville Fashion Week at Lipscomb University, Ezell Center, March 30–31. Throughout the week, Lipscomb will also display selected items from its Halston Collection in the Beaman Library through Nashville Fashion Week. Two panels will take place each day on March 30 and March 31. Admission to all panels is free, but online registration is encouraged. Featuring industry insiders, these panels offer students and anyone interested in fashion the opportunity to learn more about the art, craft and business of fashion. Panel descriptions and speakers are: The Fashion AdWednesday, March 30, 12 p.m. From the images of supermodels shot by Steven Miesel to celebrities like Nicole Kidman who grace the covers and pages of fashion magazines, the fashion ad can be just as important as the collection itself. It is one of the finest collections of its type from an iconic designer whose work was worn by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Lucille Ball, Liza Minelli and Lauren Becall. The Halston collection was donated to Lipscomb’s fashion merchandising department by Georgette Mosbacher, president and CEO of Borghese Cosmetics in New York City. Fashion design majors at Lipscomb study the collection to better understand how fine fashions are conceived, designed on paper, presented on the runway and brought to the fashion market. Items will be on display in the Beaman Library.

It's a comparison that bears repeating: In many ways, Nashville's fashion scene reminds us of Nashville's rock scene in recent years. Both have thrived in country music's shadow where others have wilted, and just as Nashville's offbeat music scene gains traction every time another publication discovers one of our scrappy indie rockers for itself, the fashion scene too finds itself charting on notable fashion radars — from tastemakers the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow to Kings of Leon to Elle and Nylon magazines.
As usual, when reflected back at ourselves, we see a city of contradictions — to borrow an oft-used phrase, we are inescapably a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll, a little bit fancy, a little bit unadorned. Turn one corner, and we find a city's worth of crafty gals rifling through discount fabric bins and stitching their own handmade goods after hours. Turn another, and we find luxurious designer fabrics at Textile Fabrics. We frequent high-end boutiques owned by the spawn of country royalty (H. Audrey), and browse musical instrument stores doubling as a vintage- and thrift-lovers paradise (Diamond Halo Vintage). Our fashion schools such as O'More keep national pace by offering students future-minded courses focused on using recycled materials, while sleepy Christian university Lipscomb holds within it a magnificent nod to the past: the archives of legendary '70s icon and designer Halston — yes, that Halston.
But this frequent vacillation between an off-the-rack and on-the-cutting-room-floor existence isn't really so surprising, because Nashville is as much Manuel's glitz as it is Anna Sui-designed suits for the gents at Jack White's Third Man Records. It is just as much the rugged country-western wear of Katy K's, the embodiment of our rural roots, as it is Imogene + Willie's, a remodeled gas station a stone's throw away selling coal miner-inspired raw denim blue jeans. For $300.
So we devote this issue to embracing these tangled contradictions. The occasion? Our city hosts its first official fashion week showcasing sartorial pursuits with Lexus Nashville Fashion Week, March 29 through April 2. With it comes a spate of runway shows (see this story for our roundup of featured designers) and boutique-hosted events at retailers around town that portray a city eager to strut her stuff, even if, in many ways, she's still looking over her sequined shoulder. Updated Toyota Statement Regarding Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

NEW YORK, NY (March 22, 2011; Posted at 7:00 AM EDT) Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has decided to continue the vehicle-production halt started on March 14 at all plants in Japan (including subsidiary vehicle manufacturers) through March 26. A decision on when vehicle production will resume in Japan has yet to be made.

Meanwhile, TMC parts plants in Japan resumed production of replacement parts for vehicles already on the market on March 17 and resumed the production of parts for overseas production on March 21.

Regarding Toyota's North American operations, so far the impact remains limited. All 13 North American vehicle and engine plants are running normally, although overtime has been curtailed to conserve parts that come from suppliers in Japan. Regarding dealerships in the U.S., inventories remain generally good.

NEW YORK, NY (March 16, 2011; Posted at 3:15 PM EDT) Regarding Toyota's North American operations, so far the impact is limited. All 13 North American vehicle and engine plants are running normally, although overtime has been curtailed for now to assure we maintain adequate inventories of parts that come from Japan. In addition, since most parts and materials for Toyota's North American-built vehicles are provided by suppliers in North America, this helps insulate Toyota's North American plants from production interruptions in Japan.

Regarding dealerships in the US, inventories are good with adequate levels of supply. Toyota now makes 12 different models in North America, including high-volume vehicles such as Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and Lexus RX 350, and nearly 70 percent of all Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. are made in North America. Prius vehicles are built in Japan, and thus impacted more by the production halt there. But for now inventory levels of the Prius at U.S. dealerships are generally still adequate.

Regarding battery production in Japan, while future production plans are to be determined, only one of three hybrid battery plants in Japan sustained limited damage from the earthquake. The other two plants are located in central Japan and were not affected. The company is making every effort to minimize any long-term impact on Prius availability.

Meanwhile, Toyota employees in the U.S. are very interested in contributing to relief efforts in Japan. To make their support go further, Toyota Affiliates in the U.S. will match their personal relief donations to the American Red Cross.

This is in addition to Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan donating 300 million yen (approximately $3.75 million) to support relief efforts.

With that in mind, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has decided to continue the vehicle-production halt started on March 14 at all plants in Japan (including subsidiary vehicle manufacturers) through March 22.

Separately, we will resume production of replacement parts for vehicles already on the market beginning March 17. This will allow us to take care of current Toyota owners who may need repairs.

NEW YORK, NY (March 13, 2011) - Toyota's associates and team members in North America extend our heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to the people of Japan, our colleagues and their families.

Our utmost concern has been the safety of all Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) team members and team members at our partner companies in the Tohoku region.

TMC has established a company-wide emergency task force to continually assess the situation and take initial measures.

There have been no reported injuries at Toyota operations, including the Tokyo head office, the Higashifuji facility, Tochigi office, Yamanashi office, Toyota Motor Tohoku facilities and at TMC subsidiary vehicle manufacturers.

While TMC plants were able to restart production on 3/11, plants that stopped production are Toyota subsidiary plants that produce parts and vehicles, including:
• Toyota Motor Hokkaido Plant
• Toyota Motor Tohoku Plant
• Central Motor Corporation Miyagi Plant, which also produces the Yaris model.
• Kanto Auto Works Iwate Plant, which also produces the Scion xB and Scion xD.

Employees at these facilities were evacuated to safe areas.

We are now conducting a detailed survey of each plant to determine the extent of any damage. We are also currently assessing the situation at our suppliers, dealers and the impact on North American import vehicles.

As we are committed to ensuring the safety of our team members and their families, Toyota has decided to suspend production at all TMC plants, as well as all subsidiary vehicle-manufacturing plants on Monday, March 14th.

Toyota’s number one priority is to support our team members at TMC, our partner companies, suppliers and dealers through this situation. On behalf of the company globally, TMC is moving to donate 300 million yen (approximately $3.75 million) for relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the Tohoku Earthquake and is also considering the provision of goods and services as needed.

U.S. probe finds no defect in Toyota's electronic throttles

DETROIT -- The U.S. Department of Transportation said today that electric systems and electromagnetic interference did not play a role in unintended acceleration involving Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles.It was a major victory for Toyota, which has sought to recover from a recall crisis and accidents allegedly linked to unintended acceleration in some of its top-selling models."There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said today in a statement.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched the study 10 months ago at Congress' urging.With the help of NASA engineers, the study sought to determine if cases of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles were caused by something other than sticky gas pedals and trapped floor mats. NASA examined nine vehicles with alleged braking problems and subjected them to electromagnetic interference testing. Engineers also looked at software codes to detect any flaws that could disrupt the electronic throttle control.“We hope this important study will help put to rest unsupported speculation about Toyota's electronic throttle control system,” Steve St. Angelo, Toyota's chief quality officer for North America, said in a statement. “We believe this rigorous scientific analysis by some of America's foremost engineers should further reinforce confidence in the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.”In August, the government said it had not found any problems with the software-driven electronic systems in Toyota vehicles during the first six months of the study.Long-term studyToyota, which has used electronically controlled throttles in its vehicles since 2002, has said its own tests ruled out electronic interference as a possible cause.The probe by NHTSA and NASA engineers found that the only causes of the unwanted acceleration were the previously identified sticking accelerator pedals and loose floor mats that could jam the pedals.Those problems were the root of massive recalls in 2009 and 2010 that rocked Toyota to its foundation and saw President Akio Toyoda come to Washington a year ago to tell U.S. lawmakers he was "deeply sorry."The study by NASA and NHTSA indicates most of the unintended acceleration complaints were related to incorrect pedal application, said David Strickland, NHTSA administrator.In response, the agency plans to launch a long-term study into the placement and design of pedals in vehicles to see if accidents can be reduced. It also plans to consider three more requirements in future vehicles: mandatory brake override systems, standardized keyless ignition systems and mandatory data event recorders.LaHood said he gives Toyota credit for proving its interest in safety throughout the recall process and the investigation period that followed.“They've understood what we do here is serious business,” he said. “What we do here is promote safety and we take a back seat to nobody.”Global recallsToyota has recalled more than 18 million vehicles globally since the fall of 2009 -- including more than 5 million for floor mats and more than 4 million for gas pedals. The Japanese automaker has paid $48.8 million in fines in three separate penalties and faces hundreds of lawsuits. U.S. regulators are looking into 89 deaths that may be associated with sudden acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles but have so far linked only a handful to the floor mat problem.Although the electronic throttle investigation turned up no flaws that would prompt another massive recall, Toyota still faces significant risks from scores of civil lawsuits stemming from the recalls.Those cases in federal and state courts, which may turn on the timing of company disclosures to regulators of already established defects, have an estimated potential liability of up to $10 billion.The previous record safety fine paid by an automaker was $1 million by General Motors Corp. for faulty windshield-wipers in vehicles made in 2002 and 2003.Reuters contributed to this report

How Lexus makes its handcrafted, wood-carved steering wheels

To make a premium steering wheel, you need premium materials. Lexus' solid-carved steering wheels (one of two types found in Lexus vehicles, the other being the wood-finished style) are made from pure walnut and birds-eye maple. After the wood pieces are selected, they first undergo a “stress process”—a weeklong alternation between humidification and dehumidification, which minimizes the possibility of warping and essentially “freezes” the wood's innate quality. Next, the wood is cut into smaller pieces, fixed to the cutting machine table by suction, not clamps, to prevent scarring. The wood pieces that go into a single Lexus solid-carved steering wheel all come from the same piece of wood, both for aesthetic reasons and for uniform strength. And because every board is different, with a different grain design, every Lexus solid-carved steering wheel is a one-of-a-kind creation. Now the craftsmanship begins to shine, as the pieces are carved into curved shapes, which will be fitted around a metal core. Lexus' steering wheel manufacturer, Miroku Technowood, has been a master of wood- and metal-working since the Meiji era, when the company's founder began making products for a 19th-century shogun. Today, Miroku is the world's only maker of carved-wood-over-metal steering wheels, and Lexus is the only automaker to use them. Here, the solid carved wood pieces have been fitted to the top and bottom of the core-metal interior, where they're glued around the wheel, forming the basic form. To ensure the quality of the final finish, Miroku purposefully uses glue that matches the shade of the wood. Next, a woodworker fine-tunes the final curves of the steering wheel's wood pieces, using a ball-end mill with a rounded tip; here the craftsman is carving finger rests at the 10-10 hand positions, subtly adjusting the blade's rotation speed to achieve uniform grooves.
Next up: the polishing station. Anyone who's worked with fine woods knows that polishing raw wood is a high art form. Hardness, density, and color will vary, even on a single piece of wood, and if the entire surface is sanded in the same way, say by machine, the result can be a slightly uneven surface. So, to achieve a fine, uniform finish, Lexus steering-wheel wood gets hand-sanded by artisans, who can evaluate the variables as they smooth things out. After the raw-wood polishing, the wheel's wood pieces advance to a filler process, also done by hand. Here, another artisan carefully brushes in the filler, evaluating by sight and touch where the most application is needed to fill in microscopic holes inherent even in fine woods. After the filler dries, the wheels receive a sealer coat, followed by a colored paint layer—applied very thinly to ensure that the natural wood tones aren't lost. The color's main purpose is to match the shade of the wood trim inside the vehicles. Finally, a thin clear basecoat is applied, followed by a thin final layer of clear paint, both to protect against UV light and scratches and to give the wheel a decorative, mirror-like finish. Finally, true to the extraordinary lengths Lexus goes to make sure all vehicle components are carefully, and personally, examined, the finished wheel undergoes hand and eye inspections before advancing to a Lexus assembly plant to receive electronics, airbags, and other components. The exhibit is not to be missed whether in broad daylight or at sunset, or most favorably, with the creative lighting display at night. Chihuly at Cheekwood continues until October 31st and on Thursday and Friday nights the park is open until 10:00 pm until the end of August. The evening exhibit will be open until 9:00 after that on Thursdays and Fridays. Treat yourself, it's worth every dime and very reasonably priced.

• 24/7 Crisis Hotline: Morning Star maintains a 24/7 crisis hotline to assist domestic violence victims seeking information, safety planning, shelter, or a listening ear.
• Emergency Shelter in a Confidential Location: The 17 bed shelter offers safety, support, and refuge for victims and their children, who may stay in the shelter program for up to 90 days.
• Transitional Housing: Morning Star offers a Transitional Living Program for those who qualify and who have successfully gone through the 90 day Shelter Program of Morning Star. Up to 12 beds in two houses are available. Residents may stay up to one year, paying a graduated rent, and participate in the case management and group counseling programs of Morning Star.
• Case Management: For every victim residing in the Morning Star Shelter or in the Transitional Living Program, Case Management is provided to assist the residents in successfully achieving independence. Issues of employment, child care, health, job training or education, and permanent housing are addressed.
• Counseling for Children/Parenting: Morning Star provides group and individual counseling for children who are traumatized victims of domestic violence. This service is free of charge and offered to children in the shelter, as well as those from the community. Morning Star provides a licensed professional counselor for these services. For adults who are victims of domestic violence there is a parenting class offered each week. This service is also conducted with a licensed professional counselor and childcare is provided.
• Court Advocacy: Morning Star’s four full-time court advocates do not offer legal advice, but do assist victims with the paperwork involved in obtaining an Ex Parte Order of Protection. Additionally, the Morning Star Court Advocates will accompany victims to the actual Order of Protection Dockets, preparing them for the hearing, as well as other non-legal preparation for other court proceedings such as divorce hearings, child custody hearings, and bond docket hearings.
• Counseling for Victims and Their Children: Both individual and group counseling is provided at no cost to those who seek the help of Morning Star. A weekly support group for victims, whether a victim is in shelter or resides in the community is available once per week, with child care provided. A new group and individual counseling program for children who have grown up in violent homes is now available, as well, and is also free of charge. • Community Education and Professional Training: Morning Star staff members are prepared to speak to civic, religious, or other groups to offer education about the dynamics of domestic violence and the resources available in the community or to conduct more in-depth, specialized, professional training about domestic violence.
• Mentoring: For nearly eight (8) years, Morning Star has enjoyed a very successful partnership with Financial Resources for Women and Children, Inc. resulting in a mentoring program for qualified survivors of family violence. A volunteer force of 35 persons mentor victims and their children, and provide loans for fundamental needs. These loans have been paid back, to what is known as the Lending Circle, at a 100% rate, and have launched many survivors and their children to a life of financial independence and success.

Students help promote “green” luxuryVanderbilt Accelerator Summer Business Institute teams up with Lexus to promote a new hybrid
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Luxury and the Lexus brand go hand in hand. But now the car company has created a new hybrid vehicle that is more fuel-efficient, lighter and leaner.

Lexus’ challenge is to reach the customer who wants a car that is both luxurious and “green.” That’s why they’re turning to students at the Vanderbilt Accelerator Summer Business Institute. The Accelerator students are being challenged to evaluate the hybrid HS250h and its target audience and create a forward-thinking marketing plan to reach that audience. This is Lexus’ second time working with Accelerator students.

The Accelerator Summer Business Institute is an intense month long business boot camp run by the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. In the program, college students and recent graduates from across the country are immersed in a competitive business environment, working to create the winning solution to real challenges from top local and national companies. The students hone essential skills in marketing, sales, finance, real estate, research and corporate strategy, while participating companies receive the brain power, creativity and proposals from at least eight teams of highly motivated millennials.

The Lexus project will launch on Monday, June 7 at Lexus of Cool Springs. Final presentations will take place Tuesday, June 15, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management’s Averbuch Auditorium.

Other Accelerator projects include:

· Nashville Music Business Council & Nashville Entrepreneur Center: The future of the music business in Nashville is evolving beyond media conglomerates to smaller, more nimble companies that leverage technologies with the goal of delivering better value to fans. The Accelerator challenge is to develop an “Accelerator”-type program for entrepreneurs interested in the business of music.

· Oasis Center: The Oasis Center works to help young people overcome serious challenges that prevent them from transitioning into a healthy adulthood. Oasis Center desires to build life skills, entrepreneurial thinking and significance within its youth population. The current brand is more reflective of a “place” – and Oasis Center is becoming more about a “movement.” The Accelerator challenge is to create a brand concept that reflects this expanded movement; connects with young people; and inspires others who would want to help Oasis Center.

· HIMSS/ Medical Banking: HIMSS Medical Banking Project is creating a new group of thought leaders called the “G7 Roundtable”. The group will consist of healthcare providers, healthcare insurance carriers, banks, government, consumers, technology firms and employers. The group’s mission is to “design the healthcare financial network of the future.” The Accelerator challenge is to create a marketing plan for the “G7 Roundtable” to encourage companies to sponsor or join the group and generate ways to get monetary value from the company’s cutting-edge research.
· Bridgestone Americas, Incorporated: Bridgestone has worked for years to connect its brand with the best of American sporting events. The Accelerator challenge is to design a unique customer rewards program that combines these sports connections with the customer.
· MyWerx: MyWerx is a new Nashville-based intellectual property firm with a wiki-based product designed to simplify the intellectual property process. MyWerx mission is to not only help protect an artist’s work, but also to make it easy for people to know who owns or licenses a work. MyWerx is turning to students at the Vanderbilt Accelerator Summer Business Institute to create a viral marketing strategy to help artists learn about the MyWerx product.
