When it comes to traveling in search of highbrow culture, New York, L.A., and a smattering of European cities are what come to mind. But word is getting out that a cultural hot spot is burning elsewhere, in Nashville, Tennessee. Mega-celebrities from Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman to Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal are being spotted in town romping among the denizens. This month, the city serves as a backdrop for the new film Country Strong, starring Gwyneth Paltrow playing a struggling country singer on the verge of a comeback. The actress reportedly fell in love with the city after filming there for several months. And before leaving, she gave a shout-out to her favorite stores, foods, and activities on GOOP, her weekly blog.Referred to as the “Refined South” or “Refined Redneck Country” by many of the local tastemakers, the city is vibrating with young restaurateurs, designers, crafters, and stylists who are producing a distinctive interpretation of the classics. Whether it’s with food, clothing or jewelry, their creations are a blend of the region’s Native American, pioneer, and antebellum history. These artists are also putting the neighborhoods where they work, such as Downtown, 12South, and East Nashville, on the cultural map. It’s no surprise, then, that Nashville will be getting its own Lexus-sponsored Fashion Week in the spring of 2011.
